XXXX Magazine, launched in December of 2009 by photographer & director Indira Cesarine, is a multimedia publication that showcases original productions of video art, fashion films, documentaries, contemporary art, photography and multimedia articles. It took over 100 contributors to bring together the first issue, which revolved around the theme “Kaleidoscopic”. The second issue, based on the theme “Surreal” presents 30 new productions from a variety of international contributors.
XXXX Magazine breaks the mould of traditional publishing by creating a magazine that is a 3-dimensional experience for viewers. Rather than reading an article or looking at still photographs, XXXX Magazine presents our content in motion as a multimedia experience. XXXX Magazine was created to promote collaborations between artists, showcasing the work of not just established names, but also emerging talent. The celebration of “archive” work is also an essential part of our concept, as XXXX strongly believes that early work of artists is just as essential as current work. Aside from our “virtual” online magazine, we showcase the work of our contributors in special events such as installations, screenings, exhibits and spontaneous “happenings” on a regular basis in cites including New York, Paris and London. Recent events include a multimedia exhibit at Visionairs Gallery, Paris in January 2010, Featuring works from the “Kaleidoscopic” Issue, as well as a preview of the “Surreal” Issue. In June 2010 XXXX Magazine presented a Video Art installation at the “Soiree Au Louvre” Benefit for the Louvre Museum in New York at the French Embassy. The Surreal Issue movies were also presented on June 23rd in a screening and launch party at Studio Cesarine in New York, with an after-party and video art installation at Provocateur Lounge. To view coverage of the events, view our photo video coverage online now in XXXX.
Exclusive coverage of contemporary art exhibits, international fashion weeks and events is updated regularly on XXXX, the XXXX Magazine Blog. The blog also presents fashion and beauty editorial, recent news from our contributors, behind the scenes reportage and multimedia articles on emerging & established artists.
In the launch issue of XXXX Magazine we had some really interesting productions, such as “FOUR WALLS” a conceptual fashion film that directed by Indira Cesarine and Edward Symes in collaboration with designer Sue Stemp. The film was shot at Alf Naman’s contemporary art building “EMERGE-N-SEE” In Chelsea and features the work of several contemporary artists including Aaron Young, Andrew Poneros, Hubert Le Gall and Jason Miller, among others. There is also a 5 minute documentary about the making of the film, and the artist’s work that is seen in the production. Another film which premiered on the site is “COUNTERFEIT CONSPIRACY”. This is a 15 minute documentary exposé on the sale of counterfeit luxury goods and the press surrounding the “links” to funding terrorism. The documentary features a behind the scenes look at the illegal sale of such products in New York, as well as questions why there are so few arrests made for these type of crimes. Overall in the launch issue are 20 original productions, varying from 1 minute video art movies to 25 minute documentaries. To see clips from several of the films, check out our launch issue trailer:

What does XXXX stand for? There are a lot of meanings behind the name…
XXXX is commonly used as a placeholder – so you can later “fill in the blank”, thus signifying that it can mean “Anything”. It generally is used to mean “Untitled’, and thus is the ultimate symbol for “creative freedom”. ”X” in mathematical terms means “multiply”; if you think about ”multimedia” it stands for the multiplication of various medias, exponentially creating a progressive result in their unique combination. XXXX Magazine is about promoting collaboration between artists, multiplying the talents of one artist with the other to create new and exciting work beyond what one is capable of creating on their own. “XXX” commonly stands for pornography, if you put an “X” in front of “XXX” you get “anti-exploitation” as “X” on its own is “Anti” or “against” (not “more” as is rather commonly & mistakenly expressed). XXXX Magazine believes in promoting humanitarian projects, in confronting subject matter that could be considered controversial, while maintaining an artistic approach. Finally “X” stands for “kisses” as we sign off ….
