“The Wanderer”?

“The Wanderer”,?Shot by photographer Willy ?Vanderperre, is the latest multimedia editorial campaign by?Dior Homme. The project was specifically conceived by Dior Creative Director, Kris Van Assche, and is oriented to the “new connected?generation that gets its fashion and trend information from online?magazines and blogs.” The “alternative?communication?endeavor” consists of a series of nine photographs of the Fall Winter 2011-2012 collection shot with an editorial point of view, as well as a fashion film ?called the “The Wanderer”. The images present a rather mysterious and isolated suburban landscape juxtaposed with the streamline cut of the dramatically lit silhouettes from the fall collection. ?Slim tailoring and monochromatic tones are juxtaposed with flashes of red. The radically modern aesthetic of Dior Homme is unmistakable, with the photo and video series encapsulating the nonchalant elegance Kris Van Assche is known for.
Aside from giving a new insight into the collection, the project?promotes Dior Homme in an alternative way to the plugged-in generation. Dior has blasted the images featuring model?Victor Nylander to select online magazines and blogs, creating a buzz about the striking collection and edgy imagery as well as their ultra modern viral marketing approach.?The project itself brings to light the fact that luxury brands such as Dior are opening up more and more these days to a new concept of marketing outside the traditional advertising approach of paying for pages in print publications. ?The buzz created from online marketing and viral campaigns can easily surpass that of print publications by way of the shear numbers that have the opportunity to view the imagery with the immediacy of the internet. ?It will be interesting to see how many other brands follow suit by blasting their own editorial productions geared primarily for online magazine and blog readers. It certainly could become the trend of the future, with exponential numbers tuning in to online publishing. ?We are looking forward to seeing the Dior Homme Spring/Summer 2012 viral campaign.

It would seem reasonable to conclude that Marco Brambilla wants us all dead. Not in the immediate ?I?m going on a violent, grotesque killing spree that would harm victim and loved ones all at once? sense, but more of the ?I?m interested in what humanity?s inevitable decline will look like.? The director of the 1993 post-apocalyptic ?Demolition Man? has shifted course over the last two decades into the formal field of visual arts, with video and photography works shown at the Guggenheim, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Kunsthalle Bern and the ARCO Foundation in Madrid. Brambilla enters uncharted territory again; this time, as creator of the first video artwork designated as an Official Selection at the 68^th Venice International Film Festival entitled ?Evolution?.

For one night only, the ten-minute film will be screened at the Sala Perla in Lido, Venice amidst an array of nineteen Out of Competition films selected by a distinguished international jury. The gravitas of Brambilla?s achievement, as the first and sole entrant producing a work of silent video art versus a scripted narrative, is alluded to even in the published opening statement by Paolo Baratta, President of the Venice Biennale. ?Technologies are in constant evolution,? says Baratta, ?with the spreading of digital and 3D techniques ? and the ways in which audiences experience cinema are constantly changing too.? No great irony there, as Baratta (wittingly or not) mentions the title, media and working techniques all fundamental to Brambilla?s entry.

The film is built upon a seamless flow of roughly 400 film excerpts, all reflecting humankind?s milestones in a grandiose, meta-historical fashion. Using the existing language of Hollywood?s versions of life, death, existence and destiny, Brambilla weaves a satirical tapestry of popular, cherished cinematic memory. The film made its initial debut during Art Basel Miami Beach last year, in an intimate poolside screening at the Standard. It was also included in a larger corpus of works from Brambilla?s solo exhibition ?The Dark Lining? at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. The enthusiastic response to the film can only be magnified now, as it ascends to a new level of global artistic mastery.

What?s most engaging is that Brambilla seems to retain a love and respect for his ?parent? profession in Hollywood, appropriating some of its most memorable tales to allow his own unique vision to surface. The satire seems neither bitter nor disparaging; rather, it appears to lightheartedly address the cycle of human existence from beginning to end (thoughts of our demise are miserable enough, why not throw in a few associations with favorites such as ?E.T.? or ?Star Wars? or Monty Python?) with a humorous lilt.

In every way, Brambilla casts humanity as a mere walk-on role in the cinematic epic of natural existence. With ?Evolution?, this extraordinary 3D moving montage renders us spectators and the spectacle all at once. Adding a bit of bravado and two decades of sincere pop-cinema appreciation, you can almost hear Brambilla call out: lights, camera, apocalypse!

PHONEBOOK MULTIMEDIA VIDEO

I caught up today with the creator of Phonebook, the latest photo journalistic essay by photographer and film maker CB Carter Smith.? The book presents a glimpse into the personal life of the artist, through photos taken on his camera phone and his text messages, montaged into a thoroughly modern layout that keeps you turning the pages. Images of girls on the loo juxtaposed with shots out of airplane windows, and even a chicken at sunrise lingering on a New York street captivate with their realism and rawness. Carter said he never planned to create the book, it was only after reflecting on the images and texts that he realized where he could take it.? After breaking up with his wife of 12 years he, he spiraled into a period of self proclaimed debauchery? “To put Phonebook in context, it all began after a calamitous breakup, when my life was thrown into a fragmented mess.?This leads to the proverbial ?lost weekend?… A two-year descent into debauchery and adventure. XXXX MAGAZINE SURREAL ISSUE LAUNCH PARTY JUNE 23RD

XXXX Magazine celebrated the upcoming 2nd issue based on the theme “Surreal” with a reception & screening of the fashion and video art films premiering in the issue, ?as well as after-party at Provocateur Lounge in Manhattan. The night started out at 7pm with a champagne cocktail at Studio Cesarine in Tribeca, to a packed house of guests.

XXXX MAGAZINE VIDEO ART INSTALLATION AT THE “SOIREE AU LOUVRE” BENEFIT

XXXX Magazine was invited to take part in the 3rd annual Young Patrons Circle of the American Friends of The Louvre Benefit, held at the French Embassy Cultural Center, the Payne Whitney Mansion, on June 3rd, 2010.?This year, the YPC?s benefit will help support the American Friends of the Louvre?s $4 million fundraising campaign for the restoration of the Mus?e du Louvre?s 18th-century decorative arts wing, a voluminous repository for pieces donated by the likes of Salomon de Rothschild, Arconati Visconti, and Stavros Niarchos.

XXXX Magazine presented a video art installation of short films created for the the launch Kaleidoscopic issue as well as a preview of films for the upcoming Surreal Issue launching in June, 2010. ?The films were showcased in the main ballroom, with 2 large scale video projections.?Directors and artists in the screening included Patrik Andersson, Indira Cesarine, Phanstasmic TV, Jordan Doner, Michael Daks, Kevin Ryan, Edward Symes, Bo Sul Kim, Menelaou & Rueberg, Monika Elkev, David Bower, John Paul Zuviate, Pato Guillamon, Jesus and Sophia Deininger. ?Projectors screened 2 different films simultaneously across the ballroom on different walls, with a total of 25 productions presented in the installation.

The “Soiree au Louvre” event was held at the former home of Payne and Helen Whitney. Known as one of architect Stanford White?s most imposing accomplishments, the modern-day home of the French Embassy denotes the classicism and grandeur of the Louvre in Paris. Attendees made their way into the second-floor ballroom, overlooking Central Park, for cocktails; Gallic-inspired canap?s; a boutique silent auction; the video art installation by XXXX Magazine and a cutting-edge soundtrack by DJ Ari, the resident DJ at Kenmare (the new NoHo bo?te by Paul Sevigny and Nur Khan.

The silent auction at the event featured?a dinner set from Bernardaud?s ?Prime Time Silver,? designed by India Mohdavi; a Dior Granville handbag; a French military cape from design duo Ruffian?s Fall 2010 Collection; deluxe gift baskets, filled with beauty products from Thierry Mugler and Clarins; a private tour of the Metropolitan Museum?s Wrightsman Gallery, highlighting the bequest of Marie Antoinette; and a bespoke tour of the Louvre, guided by a scholar. Among the evening?s fine art lots: a signed Damien Hirst posters from Gagosian Gallery; two prints by the French street artist WK Interact from Jonathan LeVine Gallery; and a collective of painting, sculpture, and photography, courtesy of KiptonART.

The American Friends of the Louvre (AFL) was founded by the Mus?e du Louvre in 2002 to strengthen ties between the Louvre and its American public, and to formalize the long-standing generosity of American patrons. Over one million Americans visit the Louvre each year, making it the most visited museum by Americans after the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Through special fundraising events and activities, the Young Patrons Circle supports AFL?s mission to raise awareness for the Louvre?s collections and museum expertise and help make the Louvre?s exhibitions and permanent collections more accessible to English-speaking visitors across the globe. PRETTY YOUNG THINGS EXHIBIT – NEW YORK

Curators Anne Huntington and Diana Campbell presented?PYT (Pretty Young Thing) exhibit over the weekend of May 22-23, 2010. ?A temporary salon-style art show,?PYT is predicated on the idea that artworks from emerging contemporary artists have an important place both in personal collections and personal spaces. With this domestic ethos in mind, co-curators Huntington and Cambell have invited over 20 contemporary artists to exhibit work at a spacious renovated downtown loft for the temporary weekend exhibition.

The Show’s name references the youth of it’s curators, the artists featured and the budding collectors it will target as guests. PYT seeks to forge relationships between collector and artist in this casual, unintimidating environment. PYT opened on Saturday May 22nd with an intimate brunch in the exhibition space, further underscoring the livability of the mixed media works being shown. The reception that evening, from 6-8pm, was attended by more than 500 guests.

The show featured works by artists Jacob Abramson & Suzette Guy, Todd Bienvenu, Winston Chmielinski, Annika Connor, Anna Coroneo, Alex da Corte, Benedict Dos Remedios, David Foote, Amit Greenberg, Nir Hod, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Alexis MacDonald, Meredith Ostrom, Anita Ragusa, Alexandra Richards, Jason Shelowitz, Mary Nelson Sinclair, Grant Singer, Carlo Van De Roer, Virginia Vergara and Martynka Wawrzniak.

There was an eclectic mix of works on display in the photo studio / loft space they chose to present the works. Ranging from a projection of graffiti art, abstract and figurative oils on canvas, photography, video art, water colors, almost every medium was on display. ?Despite the wide range of works chosen, the exhibit maintained a cohesive theme that tied everything together in a unique and modern way. The selection of works came off as extremely fresh and the selection of artists was for the most part very on point with the concept… overall I would say it was an brilliant selection for these young curators who have a strong eye for what people are interested in right now. Looking forward to seeing what they will come up with next!

On January 28, 2010, Visionairs Gallery Paris presented “Carte Blanche” multimedia exhibit by photographer and director Indira Cesarine, in collaboration with XXXX Magazine.

?Carte Blanche? by Indira Cesarine is a multimedia exploration of visual references and ideology that have inspired her since she began her artistic career.? Touted as a ?photographic child prot?g??, Cesarine?s first solo exhibition was at the age of 16 at the Paul Mellon Arts Center. Over the years her work has sparked the interest of some of the world?s top creative directors, having been commissioned for British Vogue, GQ, Glamour and L?Officiel as well as many other international publications and advertising campaigns.? In 2009 she produced and launched the multimedia publication XXXX MAGAZINE, showcasing original multimedia productions of fashion and video art films. The launch issue, The Kaleidoscopic Issue, was brought together through the collaboration of over 100 creative contributors.

A fascination with the exploration of light combined with intense close up portrait style imagery has become her signature. In a return to her work from her first exhibition in 1988, ?Carte Blanche? presents imagery that once again explores themes of experimental exposure, solarization, fractured light and dramatic composition. ?Her inspiration has often come in the unwoken hours of sleep, as with her imagery she can bring to life the visuals of her dreams, often unworldly creatures that are inspired by myth and folklore.

?Carte Blanche? is a presentation of several of Cesarine?s recent series, including Eyes Open, Eyes Closed, an ode to Surrealism. ?In a series of nude portraits she explores the innocence and serenity of dreamlike states juxtaposed with the intensity of consciousness. In Kaleidoscopic, a photographic and video presentation, the multifaceted nature of visual icons is presented through the representation of modern day mythical goddesses.?? Other imagery includes a photographic portrait series inspired by fairies, Faire Philtre, video art films Four Walls, Monocromatic Kaleidoscopic and Kabaret, as well as clips from the launch issue of XXXX MAGAZINE.

Her latest film for XXXX Magazine, THE SPELL, directed in collaboration with Phantasmic TV, premiered at the exhibit. It was projected outside the gallery as well as on interior screens juxtaposed against the photographic images used in the film, the “Eyes Open, Eyes Closed” series.

The exhibit was open from January 28 – February 10th, 2010.
