This summer, The Big Screen Plaza (BSP) will present a selection of XXXX Magazine original productions on its 30x 16 ft HD, LED screen overlooking its 10,000ft² Plaza in Chelsea, Manhattan. BSP strives to enrich the cultural center of Manhattan through the screening of video art. The 1 hour XXXX Magazine screening includes a selection of some of the best video art and fashion film productions published to date, curated by Adriana Farietta for the Big Screen.

The 64th?Cannes Film Festival, which took place May 11-22, is being called one of the best in recent years, with a stellar selection of judges presided by the one and only Robert De Niro (who once said he would never return to France), the jury included actors Jude Law and Uma Thurman. Everyone was talking about the strength of the films in competition, such as Terrance Mallick’s The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt (which won the Palme D’Or despite being booed by the audience at the premier), Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia starring Kristen Dunst (who won for Best Actress), Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live in with Antonio Banderas, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris with Owen Wilson, Lynne Ramsey’s psycho-horror We Need to talk About Kevin starring Tilda Swinton and Restless, Gus Van Sant’s latest which was in the Certain Regard selection. It was also a special year for me to be at the festival, as my documentary short, In Face Of Disability, produced for XXXX Magazine’s launch issue, was featured at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner.

I arrived in Cannes on Thursday, May 12th, and after dropping off my bags at my host Richard Haines’ boat, The Rose Of Kingston, the first thing I did was go to pick up my black Cannes director’s badge at the festival headquarters, which conveniently was located across the street from the port. As a director with a short film at the festival, I was able to access the majority of screenings of films in and out of competition. Being the first to arrive on the boat, I spent most of the day reviewing the catalogue of films, and selecting the must-sees. Tilda Swinton’s movie was high on my list, being one of my favorite actresses, I also wanted to see Pedro Almodovar’s film as he is such a brilliant director, and as well as Woody Allen’s movie, which was far better received than his film at the festival last year.

Later that evening, after dinner on the boat with my host as well as the brilliantly fun artist Jeffrey Dread, who keeps everyone laughing, we headed out to Cathy and David Guetta’s Fuck Me I’m Famous party at Baoli. The venue was packed with fanatical dance club starry-eyed raver types, all with video camera phones pointed at the DJ booth in case they missed a moment of fame. The hype surrounding DJ David Guetta has clearly reached fever pitch, now that he one of the top DJ’s in the world, even celebrity guests were acting like star struck fans.? I ended up running into my old friend Evan Hainey, a talent manager from Untitled Entertainment, who I met many years back in New York, who was partying away with Rosario Dawson at Cathy Guetta’s table by the DJ booth. It was a fun start to the Cannes festivities, despite the slightly overwhelming crowd.

On Friday, May 13th, my host Richard organized lunch at the famous Eden Roc Hotel, also known as the “Hotel Du Cap”, which is the place to see and be seen during the festival. Richard is well known for his book Cameleon, which he plans to produce into a feature film (yours truly shot his portrait for the book jacket), and is a huge supporter of the arts, always with a very entertaining crew in tow. It was a perfect day for lunch at Du Cap, as the clouds had finally cleared. As we sat down, Antonio Banderas sat at the table to our left, and joining him was his wife Melanie Griffith and the legendary Jane Fonda, who was looking fabulous despite her 73 years. Tarrantino producer Lawrence Bender popped by the table to say hello, and I chatted with the lovely Amy Perfect, wife of restauranteur Livio Alvaro Bisterzo of London’s hot new restaurant 5 Pollen Street. I couldn’t resist later having a chat with Melanie Griffith, who was very sweet with her whispery voice, I loved her in Working Girl.

Afterwards we met up with Rob Hersov for sunset drinks in the port on one of the many super yachts lining up. I chatted with the fascinating Yanou Collart, known for her fabulous Moulin Rouge hats, and film producer Tova Laiter. Somehow I ended up eventually at Cannes hotspot VIP, where I ran into New York nightlife’s ringleader Unik, who was in town for his Haiti fundraiser with Sean Penn, as well as Fawaz Gruosi from Grisogono, Mads Kornerup from Shambala Jewels and Olivia Cole from British GQ. After a near fatal foot crush under Lawrence Bender’s SUV, I managed to make my way back to the boat for some much needed sleep!

On May 14th, The Pirates of Caribbean premiered their latest sequel On Stranger Tides, starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush, which opened on May 14th in Cannes to much fanfare. We had a perfect view of the excitement right from the upper deck of the boat, as the actors left the theater. Johnny was literally dragged away from signing autographs of his fans by his security, and Penelope looked fabulous in her blue dress as she calmly walked by, not stopping for fans. The Pirates latest film, which was not actually in the competition, but was a big commercial draw to the festival, wasn’t considered a masterpiece. Lacking a love story, the film focused on a hunt to find the Fountain of Youth, with all the sword fights and typical pirates fare we have seen in the previous 2 films, thus not really a surprise, but entertaining nonetheless if you like that sort of thing. Penelope was considered by most to be rather wooden in her performance, while Johnny Depp adeptly performed his role as to be expected, yet without any new twists to his character. It was the one of the biggest budget films to be screened, but was not necessarily the one most spoken about.

On Saturday evening we decided to check out the Cannes Pop-up restaurant Nobu, which was situated on top of the Hotel 314, and had brilliant views overlooking Cannes. Owned by chef?Nobu?Matsuhisa and Cannes Festival Head of Jury Robert De Niro, the Pop-up Nobu was created for the 2 weeks of the festival, and did not disappoint. Many of the top restaurants and venues from around the world open up their pop-up versions for the festival, including Nikki Beach Club and Parisian haute boite Le Baron. Apparently next year The Box is planning to come to Cannes, which I imagine will be extremely well received, and will certainly spice things up.

Monday evening after drinks with Louise O Riordan, who was hosting a cocktail on the boat next to us, I went with Victoria Hervey to Noami Campbell’s Fashion for Relief event.? Hosted at the historic Forville Market, the catwalk show featured Jane Fonda in a Marchesa Dress, Yasmin Le Bon, Karolina Kurkova, Novak Djokovic, Victoria Silvstedt, Rosario Dawson, Barbara Becker, Robert De Niro’s wife Grace Hightower, as well as of course, Naomi Cambell herself, who wore dresses by YSL and Alexandrer MqQueen. The event raised funds for victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, with proceeds going to the Japanese Red Cross. The afterparty was at restaurant / nightclub Baoli, where I ran into director Peter Martin and chatted with festival judge Jude Law.

On Wednesday evening, the Swiss Luxury Jewelry brand Di Grisogono threw their fabulously fun 10 Year Anniversary at Cannes event at the Eden Roc Hotel. The Gypsy Glam themed event was by far one of the most fun events of the week, with over 800 guests invited to the celebration. The Gypsy Kings as well as The Black Eyed Peas performed, and outside on the terrace they unveiled the de Grisogono X Maybach 62S Saloon diamond encrusted, bullet proof car. Naomi Campbell, Leonardo Di Caprio, Rosario Dawson, Bianca Balti, Rob Lowe, Goldie Hawn and Boris Becker were some of the guests at the event. Leonardo held fort in a booth by the stage with Di Grisogono owner Fawaz Gruosi and Naomi Cambell, and a posse of glamorous guests / fans surrounded the table, hoping to be part of the excitement.? After the performances and fireworks, a group of us headed back to Leonardo’s villa for an exclusive after-party, which carried on until sunrise.

On May 18th, Replay threw their much anticipated Cannes launch party of their new label, White Seal. The upper-market range of evening dresses, jeans and leather jackets for men and women features a lot of one-off looks and assymetrical cuts. Victoria and I had stopped by the Cannes showroom the day before to pick out Replay looks to wear to the event, which was at the Martinez hotel. I picked out an asymmetrical black silk dress with silver beading on the shoulder. It was a hard choice as the new collection has some great pieces, the leather jackets are also brilliantly cut. We headed to the party on Wednesday evening after the Roberto Cavalli store opening & cocktail. Rumour has it that they were so strict at the door, they didn’t even let actress Misha Barton in. After a rather slow start, the evening picked up once Jamaroqui came on stage to perform to the packed space. ?They did a 2 hour performance of some of their best tracks and keep the party going until well after midnight.

One of the final hurrahs of my 10 day Cannes experience was the amfAR benefit, which was also held at the Hotel du Cap. This year at the Cinema Against Aids Gala they raised over $10 Million for the Foundation for AIDS research.? In it’s 18th year at Cannes, the stars always come out in full force to show their support for the cause. Event chairs included amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole, Janet Jackson, Patrick Dempsey, Milutin Gatsby, Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele, Milla Jovovich, Ryan Kavanaugh, Karl Lagerfeld, Michel Litvak, Freida Pinto, Carine Roitfeld, Brooke Shields, Gwen Stefani, Donatella Versace, and Harvey Weinstein with many celebrity guests including Robert De Niro, Sean Penn, Goldie Hawn, Jane Fonda, Jude Law, Kanye West, Naomi Campbell, Uma Thurman and Kirsten Dunst. At the gala dinner there was a live auction with several items donated to commemorate the late Elizabeth Taylor, who was the founding chairman of amfAR, including a limited edition Herbs Ritts photograph of her which sold for 150,000 euros and an Andy Warhol Liz lithograph that went for 400,000 euros. 1 Million euros was raised by HSH Prince Albert of Monaco and his fianc?e Charlene Wittstock for a chance to play tennis with the prince and a swim lesson with the Olympic swimmer Charlene. Even Karl Lagerfeld threw in his services by donating 2 private portrait sessions with him (plus a Couture Chanel Jacket) that were auctioned off for 180,000 Euros each. Following the gala there was official amfAR after-party at the Eden Roc, which this year was sponsored by L’Oreal Paris, and was hosted by Patrick Dempsey, Milla Jovovich, Freida Pinto, and Gwen Stefani.

The amfAR After-Party is always one of the more glamorous at Cannes with everyone dancing on the terrace wearing their gala gowns and black tie suits. I ran into Julia Restoin-Roitfeld with her boyfriend Robert Konjic as I arrived at the party, and chatted with them about the short film we did together for XXXX Magazine’s Voyeur Issue, The Crush. It was impossible not to dance, with DJ’s Samantha Ronson, Sebastian Perrin, and Michelangelo L?Acqua playing music late into the night. It was a brilliant and memorable Cannes event, with a few days to wind down before returning to the realities of the city.

XXXX MAGAZINE PRESENTS BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE SURREAL ISSUE COVER & THE SPELL VIDEO ART FILM

A behind the scenes look at the making of video art film The Spell as well as XXXX Magazine’s? Surreal Issue Cover art.? Directed by Indira Cesarine and edited by John Paul Zuviate, this 6 minute short presents the inspiration behind the visuals in these productions, as well as a behind the scenes look on set during the shoot. The images from the cover were from the photographic series Eyes Open, Eyes Closed, by Indira Cesarine, and were initially exhibited at Visionairs Gallery in Paris, France in January 2010.? Inspired by early work of Surrealist artists ManRay and Jean Cocteau as well as the Manifesto of Surrealism, in the series of nude portraits she explores the innocence and serenity of dreamlike states juxtaposed with the intensity of consciousness. The Spell video art film was shot on the same day in a collaboration with video team Phantasmic TV, who came on board to co-direct the video version of the images.

XXXX MAGAZINE SURREAL ISSUE LAUNCH PARTY JUNE 23RD

XXXX Magazine celebrated the upcoming 2nd issue based on the theme “Surreal” with a reception & screening of the fashion and video art films premiering in the issue, ?as well as after-party at Provocateur Lounge in Manhattan. The night started out at 7pm with a champagne cocktail at Studio Cesarine in Tribeca, to a packed house of guests.

XXXX MAGAZINE VIDEO ART INSTALLATION AT THE “SOIREE AU LOUVRE” BENEFIT

XXXX Magazine was invited to take part in the 3rd annual Young Patrons Circle of the American Friends of The Louvre Benefit, held at the French Embassy Cultural Center, the Payne Whitney Mansion, on June 3rd, 2010.?This year, the YPC?s benefit will help support the American Friends of the Louvre?s $4 million fundraising campaign for the restoration of the Mus?e du Louvre?s 18th-century decorative arts wing, a voluminous repository for pieces donated by the likes of Salomon de Rothschild, Arconati Visconti, and Stavros Niarchos.

XXXX Magazine presented a video art installation of short films created for the the launch Kaleidoscopic issue as well as a preview of films for the upcoming Surreal Issue launching in June, 2010. ?The films were showcased in the main ballroom, with 2 large scale video projections.?Directors and artists in the screening included Patrik Andersson, Indira Cesarine, Phanstasmic TV, Jordan Doner, Michael Daks, Kevin Ryan, Edward Symes, Bo Sul Kim, Menelaou & Rueberg, Monika Elkev, David Bower, John Paul Zuviate, Pato Guillamon, Jesus and Sophia Deininger. ?Projectors screened 2 different films simultaneously across the ballroom on different walls, with a total of 25 productions presented in the installation.

The “Soiree au Louvre” event was held at the former home of Payne and Helen Whitney. Known as one of architect Stanford White?s most imposing accomplishments, the modern-day home of the French Embassy denotes the classicism and grandeur of the Louvre in Paris. Attendees made their way into the second-floor ballroom, overlooking Central Park, for cocktails; Gallic-inspired canap?s; a boutique silent auction; the video art installation by XXXX Magazine and a cutting-edge soundtrack by DJ Ari, the resident DJ at Kenmare (the new NoHo bo?te by Paul Sevigny and Nur Khan.

The silent auction at the event featured?a dinner set from Bernardaud?s ?Prime Time Silver,? designed by India Mohdavi; a Dior Granville handbag; a French military cape from design duo Ruffian?s Fall 2010 Collection; deluxe gift baskets, filled with beauty products from Thierry Mugler and Clarins; a private tour of the Metropolitan Museum?s Wrightsman Gallery, highlighting the bequest of Marie Antoinette; and a bespoke tour of the Louvre, guided by a scholar. Among the evening?s fine art lots: a signed Damien Hirst posters from Gagosian Gallery; two prints by the French street artist WK Interact from Jonathan LeVine Gallery; and a collective of painting, sculpture, and photography, courtesy of KiptonART.

The American Friends of the Louvre (AFL) was founded by the Mus?e du Louvre in 2002 to strengthen ties between the Louvre and its American public, and to formalize the long-standing generosity of American patrons. Over one million Americans visit the Louvre each year, making it the most visited museum by Americans after the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Through special fundraising events and activities, the Young Patrons Circle supports AFL?s mission to raise awareness for the Louvre?s collections and museum expertise and help make the Louvre?s exhibitions and permanent collections more accessible to English-speaking visitors across the globe. “COUNTERFEIT CONSPIRACY” is a 15 minute documentary expos? focusing on the controversy surrounding the sale of counterfeit luxury goods and the “links” to funding terrorism and other underground criminal activities. The documentary focuses mainly on one of America’s most notorious counterfeit markets, Canal Street, and questions why so few people are arrested for these types of crimes. TRIBECA GRAND HOTEL 2009

On September 9th It was announced the film KALEIDOSCOPIC, directed by Indira Cesarine for the launch issue of XXXX Magazine, was chosen to be screened at the first NEW YORK FASHION SHORTS film festival event, presented by designer Bruno Grizzo and Curated by artist Kostantinos Menelaou.? The screening took place during New York Fashion Week at the Tribeca Grand Hotel on September 11, 2009 to a packed house of film aficionados and fashionistas, followed by a buzzing party with the Misshapes performing. The screening was dedicated to promoting the medium which has become a valuable source of inspiration for the film and fashion industries. New York Fashion Shorts showcased 14 ?of the best fashion related short videos and films from across the world?.??One of the first fashion films directed by Indira Cesarine, KALEIDOSOSCOPIC featured clothing by Catherine Malandrino and music by MOBY. Starring 3 models amongst wafting smoke and special effects, Boa Hoa, Alyona Zubakina and Celia Becker, were each transformed into beautiful Kaleidoscopic goddesses. Phantasmic TV duo Tripp and Jenna Watt, who edited KALEIDOSCOPIC, attended the event with Indira, as well as reporter Julia Walker, Hairdresser Ward Stegerhoek, and Jill Van Den Brule from Unicef.

XXXX MAGAZINE checked out the latest fashion trends of Fall 2009 at New York Fashion Week. ?Amongst the chaos of over 155 shows that hit the runways there were several major trends that were not to be missed… the 80?s were everywhere… punk 80?s, glam 80?s, disco 80?s… the classic hourglass shape of the 40?s was highly visible on the catwalk, as well as architectural looks with graphic silhouettes…

X 80?s FEVER

80?s Fever is back. One of the main themes of New York?s Fashion week, this fall you will find yourself wearing leather jackets, metallic mini dresses, graphic tees, sequins, black leather jeans and even shoulder pads which are back in full force. Glamorous and hard, tough and chic looks perfect to rock the pavement and hit the dance floor. MARC JACOBS channeled the 80?s in both his main line and for Louis Vuitton, a clear indicator that this is the look for fall…. Yigal Azrouel, William Rast, Thakoon, Miss Sixty, Kai Kuhne, Thaakon, Herv? Leger… the list goes on of other New York designers who were inspired by these looks for fall …

X SEXY PUNK

Glam Punk is the comeback that never went away. The sexy goth girl and 80?s punk chic was an alternative 80?s look to the disco divas. Punkers are never without their leather and mesh, spray-on leggings, and slashed latex all of course worn with the prerequisite black eyeliner.? Mark Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Deisel Black Gold, Miss Sixty, William Rast, Yigal Azrouel Custo Barcelona and Rodarte were among some of the designers who threw punk looks down the runways.

X? ARCHITECTURAL INVASION

Strong cuts, bold geometric patterns fitted to the body or draped with layers and always marked by strong shoulders make up the architectural looks for fall. Fransisco Costa at Calvin Klein was most noted in New York for his defined collection which showed strong geometric patterns and sculptural silhouettes. Kai Kuhne?s strong graphic shapes created a modern Joan Crawford look with architectural finishes. Three as Four, Zac Posen, Thuy, Proenza Shouler, Herve Leger, and Rodarte also showed looks with an architectural edge.

X WARTIME FASHION

Structured hour glass shapes with tiny waists and form fitting knee length skirts contouring the figure is what the fashion of the 1940?s were all about.? In these uncertain economic times, it is no surprise that designers found inspiration from this era. The retro look hit the runways with ladylike chic. Silhouettes this season with wool skirt suits, tweed dresses, sheer blouses, and sophisticated nipped-waists were all about the 40?s. On an edgier note, some designers were inspired by this era but showed looks with a modern twist, including tight silhouettes in materials like leather with an subtle architectural edge. Michael Kors, Thakoon, DKNY, Michelle Obama?s favorite Jason Wu, Ruffian and on the more glamorous side, Zac Posen?s collection, had the flavor of this era.

XXXX MAGAZINE CREATIVE DIRECTOR, INDIRA CESARINE, MEETS UP WITH DESIGNER CUSTO BARCELONA

During the frenzy of fashion week I managed to hook up with the trendy and eco-friendly designer Custo Barcelona, as he was preparing for his show. In between the madness of models during their fittings and other reporters popping in for interviews we sat down to talk about his latest collection.? Custo has been showing at New York fashion week since 1997, and has become famous for his bright colored graphic textile designs, and hippy chic direction. Hailing from Spain (of course!) he prefers to show in New York, so his collection can get the exposure it needs to be on an international level. His latest collection is his most sophisticated yet, with an ?eco-glam? theme.? It is a fusion of graphics, colors and textiles, mixing references to animals and nature with a Victorian romanticism. Custo only uses synthetic/organic fabrics. Vocally anti-fur with his collection, he maintains the eco quality of his textiles by for example creating faux fur out of bamboo.? He presented to me some of his latest looks, which all have hidden references to the earth and nature. On one of his designs, the hand made embroidery on the fabric represents the ?rivers?, the circles on others represent ?the world? and his favorite is a dress that exemplifies the ?rainforest?.? Wearing his clothes you can be self- assured you are promoting pro environmental concerns inside and out…?? We love his anti-exploitation approach!
